Time for a little rant me thinks…

October 31st, 2004 · 3 Comments

Well I think I am long over for a little rant so here are two for the price of one.

First CSS, well not CSS itself, as it is great when you get it right it just seems to take a while to learn. What I want to rant about is the little W3C CSS graphic that you can now see proudly displayed below the menu.

Today I clicked on the Valid XHTML link on the menu for the first time and the validator it came up with a couple of errors which were quickly fixed, so I decided to add the W3C XHTML graphic and I thought “well why don’t I validate the CSS, while I am on the W3C site” so I did and a few errors came up and I fixed them and I added the W3C CSS graphic. So some reason I then validated the XHTML again and it was invalid! I looked at the error and it was in the HTML for the W3C CSS graphic that I had taken straight from page returned by the validator. If W3C can’t get it right what hope the rest of us !

Now “Telephonic Spam” now I am not talking about cold callers, although they are annoying enough at least they hang up when you do. I am talking about the automated crap I seem to get every day now, I know at the other side of the pond they have been suffering from this forever but it is only in the last year that it seem to have got bad here.

First I don’t want the “free holiday villa in Spain” that the automated voices are always offering. I can take some heat but my genetics come from Scotland and Lithuania so cold, rain and snow are what they are used to not endless sun. I also have fair skin and only way I could get a tan would be to bath in cold tea every day for a month so skin cancer would be a certainty if I was vacationing every year in Spain.

Second I would love a Porsche, but I only have on street parking and I don’t think anyone would give me cover!

My third point is the most important, once they have rung your number you can’t get control of your own phone back until they hang up!
What happens if I am just going to the phone to call 999 and I get one of these calls? Okay you say that statistically that is unlikely but that dear readers is on the basis of the number of 999 calls you make. I however like to play with matches and sometimes my friends the flames get a little out of control. Ahh you say use your mobile, well sometimes it is my mobile I am burning as it has to be taught a lesson!

Okay they are hauling me off the the fire retardant room again :-)

Later,
Kev

    Woohoo!
Well done matey. We did notice you were working on things over the weekend as the pages were not rendering correctly. Validation is a pain, but necessary more and more as people are, quite rightly, expecting some standards in web development.
It’s not perfect though - just try dropping a flash movie into a page and watch the XHTML validator throw a fit ;)

    Hi nellus,

yes it was one of these problems where it was fine on my machines but everyone else was not getting a CSS file, damn caching! I had missed out a / in a path typical.

I am already applying what I learned at the weekend doing this to my work, I think I am at last getting a grip of CSS. fingers crossed.

I’d recommend the O’Reilly’s Cascading Style Sheet, The Definitive Guide. Enormous level of detail I’ve simply not ben able to get from the web. Learned a great deal from it.
