Battling the Belkin once more

May 14th, 2005 · 4 Comments

I have just spent the evening once more fighting with the Wireless Belkin ADSL router that caused me problems in the past. These days I don’t use it as an ADSL router just as an wireless access point. Yesterday will looking at the DHCP table on my main router I discovered a couple of Ethernet connection registered that shouldn’t have been there. Now logically of course an ethernet connect should mean a computer was wired to the main router but it also means that there was access via the Belkin box through its wireless connection which connects to the main router by cat 5.

Of course it has been a while since I setup the Belkin router and I knew I had changed the default IP address but not what I had set it to so I reset the box. Then I remembered that I didn’t know what I had done to set it up in the first place. After a few hours going through the Belkin boxes rather limited options, well compared to the Linksys that I run. I got it working by turning off the Firewall. This of course means that I cannot use the MAC address access list which is a firm front door in the face of anyone trying to get in.

The solution is to set up the WEP encryption on both routers and on my Mac’s I would still like to use an access list but never mind.

Another geeky thing I have added to my list of things to do is make a Podcast. If you want to know what a Podcast is the check out Britcast. I have been inspired by my friend Neil Dixon and his Podcasts. I will ignore the comment about Kevin being a name for a Gold Fish :-)

Routers and the like can be a massive pain in the ass. I remember upgrading the firmware on my Linksys in the US only to find that I had to revert to an in-between release to get it to work at all. Ah… those were the days… Now I just let Neil deal with it. :)

The podcast thing is prodding me into some sort of action as well. I’m active on the Britcaster forums, but alas, even if I do podcast, I can’t be a part of the cool kids in the BC club. (lowly American hangs her head and scuffs the dirt) I think I’m gonna try just doing audio options of my blog posts to start with. Then I’ll decide if I like this stuff.

And yes, Kevin is a keen name for a goldfish. Up there with Alan and Brian. ;)

    smooches~

I always thought Fred would be a great name for a goldfish.

I had a cockatiel called Eric - he was gay. I’m not kidding.

I had a colleague who had lesbian rabbits.

I though all Goldfish were called Bob, that is all they seem to say. :-)
