L3 L-Word in Very Windy Blackpool

December 3rd, 2007 · 6 Comments

Just back from a long weekend in Blackpool. I went down to the L3 L-Word convention in Blackpool with Louise as part of her birthday celebrations.

For those of you who don’t know “The L Word is a television drama series on Showtime that portrays the lives, loves and learnings of a group of lesbian and bisexual women and their friends, family and lovers in Los Angeles.” Wiki

I was a bit apprehensive as I did kind of have the worry that I would be the only bloke their but I wasn’t and
everything was great. Spoke to a few people, hello to the Wigan posse if you are reading this, you will know who you are :)

The guest were :

Eric Mabius who is now in Ugly Betty. He made several references about how refreshing it was to get out of the “Hollywood Bubble” for a bit and that it was great to meet the fans.

In the first Q & A Laurel Holloman mainly seemed to get asked questions about Jennifer Beals who plays her character’s off and on partner Bett in the show. I think this is mainly down to the the fact that Jennifer Beals has not attended a convention yet but it was a bit of a shame that Laurel wasn’t asked more about herself and her character.

Leisha Hailey rocked the place on Friday night with her new band UH HU HER although the sound system in the hall was not the best it sounded great even if I couldn’t make out the words. We did get the cd that was on sale so I hope to hear it better soon.

Erin Daniels simply put was a hoot. Her natural one liners were amazing and her mimicry was great, Louise and I were impressed by her attempt at a Glasgow accent. I asked her at the signing if she enjoyed playing a “nasty” part in Dexter and she said “yes it was great fun”. I do think she would be great in a comedy and I hope she finds a project soon.

Kate Moenning at least one person we spoke too thought that Kate was “stand-offish” but I think she is just a shy and a bit nervous person. Some of the fans I think do have to remember that she is not actually Shane the character she plays in the show. A couple of people at her first Q & A said “Shane” when they should have said “Kate”.

The weather in Blackpool was terrible very high winds and really heavy rain. On Friday night the wind destroyed a carrier bag that we had with two kebabs and two cans of Coke in it. Only one kebab survived and seemingly my sad little face looking at the destroyed kebab on the ground was very funny.

yeah, the weekend was great, but we wish we had booked into the norbreck hotel because we had to walk 20 mins to get to our hotel, or pay for taxis all the time, always funny getting trapped in a gale force wind tho!! with terrential rain! ha ha. our hotel was a total dive !!! but seeing the stars from the show each daycheered us up! i tried to steal kates beer, she had a look of panic on her face! lol.

it is good to hear from someone else who was there, our hotel was also far away, it took us about an hour one night to walk back, the wind was in our face all the way.
